Soft materials can spontaneously order thereby to some degree tolerating imperfections such as deviations in size and shape of its constituent structures. Another very useful property is their large susceptibility to external fields. Together, these properties are commonly exploited to generate ordered materials. We investigate how colloidal and block copolymer solutions order and orient in external shear fields using in-situ x-ray and neutron diffraction. The studies show that soft crystalline lattices have limited order and complicated diffraction patterns because of their softness. We further discuss how common inkjet printers can be used for controlled assembly and loading of vesicles for pharmaceutical applications.
